NEW DAY 307: A fruitless quest

I’ve gone no-added-sugar for the past two weeks, and am now a few days into the third. This is part of a reset I did to bust through a plateau that I realized after the fact was the result of A) body recomposition, and B) a too-small calorie deficit — but it was nonetheless effective in getting my body to cough up the pounds it was clinging to all winter. As an over-zealous twist to my sugarless adventure, I thought, let’s run an experiment and see what this “no fruit” thing is all about.

After two weeks of no sweeteners and no fruit, I can tell you what it’s all about: NONSENSE.

I’ve been at this weight-loss business for over 10 months now, and never once in that time did I have a single craving. Not once. Ever. Unbelievable, right? But it’s true! I mean, did unhealthy food sound good sometimes? Sure. Did the wafting scent of something delicious beckon to me here and there? Of course. But there was no sudden overwhelming urge that struck out of nowhere to raid the bakery section and snack aisle of the grocery store and gorge myself on everything within reach. Hell, there wasn’t even that pesky little “go on, just one little treat — you deserve it!” or “it’s a special occasion!” or “one piece of that won’t hurt” or “everyone else is having some”; because I simply didn’t want that poison in my body. Besides, after being off it for a while, it doesn’t taste like it used to, anyway. The few times I did indulge, I immediately got stomach aches. It’s the very best kind of “hits different”: a natural deterrent.

Enter No Sugar, No Fruit Experiment Weeks. GURL-UH. Now, I will say, I probably couldn’t have timed this worse if I’d tried: the two weeks of this ill-informed, self-imposed challenge were PMS week, immediately followed by period week (cuz that’s how that works). That alignment did me no favors when the cravings struck — and strike they did. It wasn’t a nonstop desire to throw down, but god damn if a Bagel Bite didn’t suddenly sound like the best thing in the world. Maybe followed by some ice cream. And hey, it’s been a while since I’ve been inside a Starbucks. White mocha, anyone?

It even infiltrated the sanctity of my dreamspace: suddenly, I was eating the literal forbidden fruit in my subconscious adventures, in addition to chocolate bars, brownies, and cookies.

The craziest thing was, I still didn’t even want to eat any of that stuff! How is it even possible to crave something you don’t want?

This is what a total absence of sugar does to a person. It flatlines logic.

But the worst part of all? Days-long stretches of constipation.

Hey. You know what’s important? Fiber.
You know what fruit is great at delivering? Fiber.
You know what you get when you cut out fruit and don’t replace it with a zillion vegetables? Stopped the fuck up.

I’m here to tell you that going sugar-free is an excellent health move. My skin is glowing. My energy is even and sustainable through long days and demanding workouts. My thoughts are clearer. Everything tastes better. My relationship with food is rational and my nutrition is in check. I genuinely, sincerely don’t miss sugar 95% of the time, and the 5% of the time I want it, I let myself have it — with no out-of-control fallout.

What is NOT a good move is eliminating an entire food group because it carries some of that stuff naturally. I already knew this; the driver behind my masochistic little experiment was a pathological curiosity to experience the My 600-lb Life diet. Why? Because.

And now I know-know.

Never again.

Fruit is back. Cravings are gone. Normal dreams are restored. Plumbing is running normally (after a major blockage was cleared — shoutout to my new BFF and personal hero, the chia seed).

Sugar is staying right where I want it, though: the heck away from me.

NEW DAY 285: Power 11 report

Let’s get straight to the stats. (Rules here.)

And, as I predicted the day before the end of the challenge, the biggest difference is in the day 1 vs day 77+1 pics. My shoulders are narrower, my smaller waist brings my arms in closer to my body in a resting position, and my clothes fit the way they’re meant to rather than squeezing in the most unflattering of ways. My neck is leaner, which makes me look taller, and my jawline is more pronounced. My legs are slimmer, which balances my proportions better. And overall, there aren’t as many rolls and pudgy bits squeezing out from every angle.

I think I’m gonna continue with the measurements and progress photos, but more like every other week or maybe only every month. It’s truly jaw-dropping to see the side-by-side differences, especially now that the weight loss has started to slow. Those days of reliable weekly drops of 3, 4, 5 pounds may be behind me, but this recomposition phase is fascinating in a whole new way.

This next little stat extends beyond the Power 11 timeframe, but it’s a pretty gobsmacking one: blood pressure. My last BP was on September 16th at a dentist’s appointment, which I noted down because I was on 75 Hard at the time and had intended to record it again at the end… which I didn’t do. However, I’m glad I have that record to contrast with the reading I got from the doctor’s appointment I had today.

September 16th, 2025: 118/84 (weight: 247.8)
March 30th, 2026: 112/60 (weight: …I’ll tell ya in a second)

That’s a significant diastolic change! My doctor pronounced my BP “excellent” and proceeded to review the results of all the blood labs she had received from the work-up she ordered for me since my appointment with her at the beginning of the month and congratulating me on my “clearly healthy body.”

Since yesterday was the official close of the Power 11 chapter, it was an appropriate day for the scale to eke out just enough of a drop to land me at 192.6 pounds — which just so happens to be the lowest weight I reached way back in early March of 2016, before I lost my focus and that whole trajectory went up in smoke. And just when I started wondering if maybe I’d get stuck here like I got stuck in the 200s for 6 stupid weeks, the doctor’s office scale clocked me at 191.6 this morning.

I’m fully in body recomp right now, and the evidence is everywhere. Getting into the 180s is going to be where the emotional recomp begins. I don’t know exactly how to prepare for it, but I know I’m on a collision course with it. All I can say is, bring on the crash.

NEW DAY 236: Stupor Bowl Sunday

Well, I had a pretty duh moment day yesterday.

Somehow in the past 2 days or so, I managed to tweak my back. It hasn’t been debilitating, but it did inform my decision to take a rest day yesterday, opting instead to spend it and most of today laid up on top of my heating pad. After taking it easy today to not only treat my back, but also to bank on a crowdless gym during the Super Bowl when I went to complete my half-marathon running session as planned, I hit a snag: I failed to remember that the Sunday gym hours are shorter than on weekdays. By the time I got there, as the employee at the check-in desk informed me, they were 18 minutes from closing.

There went my planned 45-minute treadmill session and strength training circuit.

For a split second, I considered taking a second rest day in a row. What was the point of a 15-minute workout?

Consistency. Showing up for myself. That was the point. That’s the entire point of all of this.

So I dutifully took my place on a treadmill in the nearly empty gym, making it my purpose to log a mile. My treadmill pace has been a modest 4.3 mph; in under 15 minutes, I was not going to be able to pull off the distance I wanted, even with a truncated 1-minute walking warm-up. So my pace tonight — and from this moment until the next increase — was 4.5.

I got 1.02 miles in 14 minutes.

Seahawks. Patriots. Whatever.
After snatching a victory from the jaws of defeat, I feel like the true champion of Super Bowl Sunday 😏

This coming week is going to be about some serious pushing of limits.
